Taking care of your Android battery

After talking about initialization of a Li-ion battery, now we try to understand how to take care of it. A lithium-ion battery is totally different than an old NiCd (nickel-cadmium) battery, so we have to forget all its problems, like the memory effect. But obviously, these batteries have some other issues that could be avoided by following these tips.

AVOID HIGH TEMPERATURE
The rate of degradation of lithium-ion batteries is strongly temperature-dependent; they degrade much faster if stored or used at higher temperatures. According to Battery University, the recommended storage temperature for most batteries is 15°C (59°F), and the extreme allowable temperature is 50°C (122°F). I think it's better if you stop using your device if temperature is over than 40°C (104°F). It's important to avoid high temperatures also when your smart phone is charging. So be careful and keep your device cool!

DON'T LET IT TURN OFF
Charging Li-ion batteries from zero reduces its capacity and trying to turn on your phone when it is under 10% of battery percentage is dangerous. Also avoid to leave your battery without charge for long time.

AVOID FULL AND/OR LONG CHARGING
As advised by Eric Limer on Gizmodo.com, also full charging your phone is not healthy for your battery. Just look at following table.
The best percentage for storing a Li-ion battery is 40% (notice how important is temperature) and keep 100% charging your battery for a long time is potentially dangerous. However all smartphones were never charged until real capacity of your battery. Also be careful to don't leave it plugged when it's already full because battery will occur in a little degradation.

So if you are looking for the best battery life, you could try to keep your battery percentage always from 30% to 80% and only once a month you should have a complete charging. However if you haven't correctly initialized your battery, it will not result so useful.

AVOID UNSTABILIZED AND/OR WIRELESS CHARGING
Charging in car or with third-party accessories could damage your battery. If you don't avoid to use original charger, check almost out that amperage and voltage match. Wireless chargers are inconvenient too because of unnecessary produced heat.

Obviously, following all these tips is annoying and complicated, but if you can avoid to charge your device for all night long and all nights, you should save a little bit your battery life.
